Presents… Lesson # 1: “The Most Unpleasant Success Principle.”

You may be wondering why I would be sending you this Lesson before
any of the Dream Bar Cafe Lessons… correct?  Good question.

It is because so many of us give our power away.  Today’s lesson is so
important to understand as a foundation for restoring our power.  I really
hope you are ready to “hear” it, and accept it.  Here we go…

“You are Exactly where you REALLY want to be.”

When you go over the fact that you are mad right now and want to write me
back saying… “No I’m NOT!!!!”  Stop.  Breath.  Now let’s delve into this.

When you totally understand the above statement, let me share a formula
with you.

CONTROL = RESPONSIBILITY,
RESPONSIBILITY = CONTROL

Everybody wants more control.  If you take your business, personal, financial,
and other goals, everything you think you want out of life, and boil all that down
to a single overriding objective, it is the Desire for greater control.

Greater control over your business.  Greater control over your time and lifestyle.
Greater control over your employee’s, coworkers, family, friends, etc.

Ironically, as much as we desire greater control, we are the ones who give it all
away.  Every time we say…

- It’s the location of my business
- It’s the devastating economy
- It’s my Job
- It’s my financial situation
- It’s my lack of training or knowledge
- It’s my Spouse, Partner
- It’s my “Fill in the Blank”

Each and every time we say an “It’s The ______________”, we really do two
things simultaneously.  One, we push away a small “weight” of responsibility,
and that makes us feel better temporarily, but, two, we give up an equal-sized
amount of control.

Whenever we deny responsibility, we give up control.  Get rid of a “pound” of
responsibility, lose a pound’s worth of control/

Please take the time to reflect on this most unpleasant success principle.  Then
implement it into your life… every aspect.

I also see people doing this on the road of their life…

At a dinner party last week, a woman was telling stories of how her former husband had treated her, details about things he said, did or never did. Eventually I asked, “How long have you been divorced?” She replied, “Thirty-six years.” Before this series of tragic stories (she thought to be amusing) she was complaining about not finding ‘Mr. Right’ and being single for 36 years. WHAT!

At the same dinner party, another guy told blow-by-blow stories about his high school football glory days and how popular and cool he was ‘back in the day.’ Yet, just earlier that evening he explained he was going to splurge in spite of his doctor’s urgent orders concerning his Type 2 Diabetes (from obesity). He once again was turned down for a job and he hasn’t made a child support payment in six months. (His former wife was the high school head cheerleader). WHAT!

Look, there is nothing more damaging to your future potential than spending your present dwelling on the past. Whatever has happened is over. Glory or defeat, once the clock struck midnight, the day was done. You are reborn each morning, and who you are each day is defined by what you do that day and that day only. You are not your past. You are only your present and your present actions will determine your future.

Now, let the past instruct you so you can be wiser marching forward, but don’t let it continue to suck you backwards. Jim Rohn teaches to have your past be “a school master, not a club.” Let it instruct you, not continue to beat you down. Look back for lessons, not excuses.

Oh, and by the way, that degree you have hanging on your wall was deemed irrelevant within 18 months after graduation. What you have learned lately is what’s important. The dusty trophy on your shelf won’t pay your mortgage, time to get into today’s playing field of life and play with intensity. There is a great line I heard that says, “You can never obtain success, you can only rent it and the rent is due every day.”

It’s great to achieve, celebrate your victories and be proud of your accomplishments, just keep your eyes on the road ahead and not fixated on your review mirror or you too, might find your life accidentally smashed into an object you didn’t see just in front of you.

Everyone needs an enemy.

• - Luke had Darth Vader.
• - Batman had the Joker.
• - David had Goliath.
• - Twenty-somethings rage against “The Man.”
• - Rush Limbaugh has the liberals.
• - Lance Armstrong has cancer.
• - Apple has Microsoft.
• - Rocky had Apollo Creed, then Mr. T, then the Russian, then…(ad nausea)
• - America used to have the Russians; now, it’s Osama bin Laden and 
• Kim Jong Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and…
• - Even God has Satan.

An enemy gives you a reason to fight. Having to fight challenges your skills, character and resolve. It forces you to assess and exercise your talents and abilities.

Without a fight, we all become fat, lazy and sedentary; we lose purpose, passion and vigor.

Want to rally your troops, mobilize your community and get everyone fired up? Find an enemy and pick a fight.

Let’s find some butt for you to kick…

• What value is your business trying to create? What is the opposite of that?
• What problem are your trying to solve? There, we’ve got a problem, but now we have to give it a face—something to make a dartboard of.

Example: At Accelerator for Success, we are trying to inspire greatness in people. We want to help people live abundant, meaningful and successful lives. Our enemy? Despondency, mediocrity, a scarcity mentality, pessimism, etc. But who is that? You can’t put despondency in the ring and give it an uppercut.

Give your enemy a face. For Accelerator for Success, it is the news media. Television and radio programs, newspapers, and many magazines are constantly barraging our eyes, ears and brains with sensational, negative and fear- worry- and anxiety-inducing images and messages.

I hate (most) of the news media. They are perverting our perception of the world, crippling our consciousness and stifling our belief systems. Their messages are sinister and incredibly dangerous to our creative potential. What they are pumping into our cars, family rooms, kitchens, airports, etc., is purposely sensationalized, alarming and distressing in order to grab your attention and sell you more news. It’s shameful. Oh, don’t get me started!

Want to ignite your own motivation, bolster your own resolve and focus your creative power? Find an enemy and pick a fight.  (Use: Dream Bar Cafe)

Let’s help you out…. What do you hate? I mean, really freakin’ loath? What makes you want to punch something?

• How about debit or credit cards?
• How about fat, fast-food joints or synthetic, laboratory-made foods?
• How about sugar, donuts, caffeine or cigarettes?

Put a picture of your credit card vendor, Krispy Kreme, Diet Coke, Marlboro Man or the golden arches on a dartboard and throw a dagger at it a few times a day.

Hey, maybe it’s your old self whom you hate.

• Take out a fat picture of yourself and put it on the refrigerator door. Rage against that fat man.
• Photocopy your bank balance and paste that on your phone. Punch that broke person out with your index finger by calling one prospect after another.
• Got a hate letter from a spouse, family member, child or customer? Hang it on your computer. Don’t let that guy back into your heart again.

Just like Rocky put a picture of Apollo on his training-room mirror, find your enemy and let their image stir your blood, have you dig a little deeper, go a little longer and fight a lot harder.

Like your finances, health is one of those easy measures of how you are doing. It’s easy to see if you are continually building your savings, growing your wealth and securing your future, or if you are constantly overdrawn and becoming bankrupt from overindulgences and poor decisions and practices.

Just as you can look at your bank account and get a good measure of your financial health, you can also take a look in the mirror and get a good measure of your physical health.

If you look at your physical health, you get a reflection of what is going on in your head. Your mindset, your philosophy and your attitude are most often the forces behind your current state of physical health. Your philosophy and mindset are also what produce the health of your finances, your relationships and your business.

Think about this: Why do 95 percent of people who go on a diet end up gaining all the weight back?

Here is why: They thought their weight was the problem. They thought that if they lost the weight, the problem would be gone. Not so. After all, the weight itself was never the problem. Their attitudes, philosophies and feelings about themselves were the problems; the weight was simply a symptom, or an outcome, of their philosophy.

Here is the key to your health (your physical health, as well as the health of your relationships, business and finances): You will only ever have the health that matches your level of self, meaning your self-image and self-worth. To improve your health, look in the mirror, not to see your body, but to see you—your feelings and attitudes about yourself and what’s possible for you.

You will only ever have the health that matches your level of self, meaning your self-image and self-worth.

So, what’s the solution? Go to work on you, not your weight, your relationships or your finances. Work on you, your beliefs about yourself and your personal philosophy—who you are and who you are worthy of becoming. You can only achieve the health you think you are worthy of.

I think we could all benefit from embracing our inner woman.

In fact, I think the whole world would benefit by mixing more yin into the yin-yang equation.

I was raised by a single father, but I had the benefit of a very loving grandmother and the influence of many strong women throughout my life, including family members, friends, partners, colleagues and a spouse. In an odd way, without the normal attachment of a constantly involved mother, I think I developed a greater appreciation for the qualities and strengths of women.

In fact, it is my belief that if men want to become more influential, greater business builders and more effective leaders, they would be well-served to study and master many of the talents and attributes that are often naturally female.

Generally speaking, I believe women tend to be good at building personal relationships, making them effective connectors and community and team builders. Women also tend to be natural social networkers. They take a sincere interest in other people’s lives, and they continually refer and recommend products and services they are excited about, giving them an innate sales advantage. It’s difficult to outsell an impassioned woman who believes strongly about something!

We are in a new era of leadership. Leadership is no longer authoritarian, where fear  and control are used to force results. Today’s most influential leaders are those who demonstrate service, compassion and empowerment, helping draw the best out of people. These are traits often inherent in the character and nature of women. Let’s not forget that women can also multitask in a manner that can make a man’s head spin.

While I strive to adopt more of these skills and qualities, I think the most important lesson I have learned from the women in my life is how to get out of my head and trust my gut. They have helped me hone the power of my intuition. To this end, I suggest we all need to embrace our inner woman, or at least cultivate and demonstrate more of the yin energy—compassion, sensitivity, insightfulness and intuitiveness—that is part of us all.

In our May issue of SUCCESS, we have some incredible examples of women who harnessed their
power and accomplished great things even against great odds and challenges—like Suze Orman,
who faced financial loss before her ultimate success (link to article); Maya Angelou, who grew up in
a time of racial inequality and poverty, becoming one of the most inspirational writers today, Maria Shriver
and PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, one the world’s most powerful women (link to article).

For all the women reading this, I encourage you to acknowledge your strengths, embrace your
power and leverage your advantages. Be a woman of influence.

AND I am going to answer one of life’s greatest age-old questions: How does the tortoise always beat the hare in a race?

I used to get frustrated when starting a new venture and I’d see the competition leap out in front and get off to a fast and successful start. Then I found the single discipline that gave me the advantage to beat anybody at almost anything – CONSISTENCY.

A lot of people get gung-ho about new goals or achievements and charge out of the gate in an explosion of activity that eventually flares out. Meanwhile, while maybe not as flamboyant of a start, a commitment to ongoing consistency will usually not only catch them but leave them in the dust every time. I do what I have found most people cannot – stay consistent.

Lack of consistency is the subtle but great stealer of dreams and desires. The stop and start process is what kills progress in any pursuit. It is probably one of the greatest reasons why people don’t ultimately achieve their goals, thus end up living a life of continuous discontent, frustration and disappointment.

Let me explain the power and advantage of consistency in an analogy…

Think of a hand-pumped water well. The water table is, let’s say, 25 feet below the ground. A pipe runs down to the water table and you have to pump the lever to create the suction to get the water above the ground and out the spout.

Here is what most people do when they start a new endeavor. They grab the lever and start pumping really hard… they pump and pump, and after a few minutes (or a few weeks), they don’t see any water (results), so they give up the lever altogether. People expect instant results. This is where most people quit, before the success ever begins.

If they persevere and continue to pump and pump the lever, eventually they get a few drops of water. This is when a lot of people say, “You’ve got to be kidding! All this pumping and for what, a few drops of water, forget it!”

If you continue to pump soon enough you will get a full and steady stream of water. Congratulations, a success!

But now here comes the secret…

Now that the water is flowing, you no longer need to pump the lever as hard. It becomes easy and you can keep the pressure steady by just pumping the lever CONSISTENTLY.

Now, in our water-well analogy, what happens if you let go of the lever for 30 seconds or so? This is what happens if you don’t strap on your gym shoes for a week or two. The water falls below the ground and you are back to square one again.  To just get back where you were you have to pump the lever like crazy again. But if you’d just kept a consistent, easy, even stroke, you could have kept the water (success) flowing.

Do you know someone who yo-yo’s with their health or fitness? Maybe you know that person intimately?! I see people buy a new book, sign up for a new program and go like crazy for a couple of weeks or months. Then they stop and end up right back where they started.

It’s not how you (or your competition) start; it’s how you CONTINUE.

The Greatest Economic Stimulus Plan Ever!
Part I

Now that Barack Obama is in the Oval Office, it would seem like an ideal time to talk about the greatest challenge facing his new administration - the triple whammy of economic meltdown, credit crisis, and a crisis of consumer confidence. All of them have combined to create the “Perfect Storm” - what appears, to a small businessman like me, to be The Great Depression, Part II.

Obama believes that the way to get out of an economic toxic disaster caused by too much government spending and debt is to spend more and go further into debt. Interesting logic.

I, on the other hand, have an economic stimulus plan that is unlike any ever offered before. Instead of raising taxes on the successful Americans who create virtually all of the jobs, I want to give taxpayers a one-year “Income Tax Vacation.” Yes, I want to suspend income taxes for 2009 and tell the IRS to take the year off. I can hear the liberal tax and spenders screaming right now.

But before I get into the details of my stimulus plan, let me explain where the liberal tax and spenders have gone wrong in their thinking.

Liberal tax and spenders complain that we cannot possibly allow the Bush tax cuts to become permanent.

Why? Because the federal government cannot afford it. The cost? About $400 billion per year. Until recently, that sounded like a lot of money. But now we all realize that $400 billion is chump change.

How is it possible that we could afford to spend $80 billion on a bailout for one company (AIG), almost $50 billion (and counting) on a bailout for the failed Big Three automakers, $7 trillion in total bailouts - but $400 billion in tax cuts is unaffordable?

How is it possible that our new president could give away almost one trillion dollars in an economic stimulus package without hesitation, but $400 billion in tax cuts for millions of hardworking Americans is unimaginable?

When Obama campaigned for president, his position was that extending Bush’s tax cuts would be unaffordable and irresponsible. Yet, it turns out that when Obama wants to spend a cool trillion dollars on his pet project, it’s available, reasonable, and necessary.

They say that a tax cut is a “giveaway to the rich,” and that it’s “unfair” and “greedy.”

Really? How can it be a giveaway when it’s our money in the first place? The real giveaway is Obama offering a “tax cut” to the 40 percent of Americans who paid no taxes last year. The real giveaway is the millions of people (virtually all Obama supporters) who are on welfare, Medicaid, food stamps, aid to families with dependent children, housing assistance, free school breakfasts and lunches … the list goes on and on.

And as for the “G word” - you mean it’s greedy to want to keep more of your own money, but it’s not greedy to ask government to give you someone else’s money?

Obama calls tax-cut “spending,” claiming that tax cuts add to the budget deficit.

Wrong! Letting people keep more of their own money does not increase government spending. It isn’t the government’s money in the first place. It belongs to the taxpayers, so it shouldn’t even be in the budget.

If someone steals your car, then has a change of heart and gives back your four tires, would that be a “giveaway”? Would you thank them for being so generous and “fair”? Would you say they increased the spending in their personal budget by giving you the four tires that they just stole from you? I think not.

When President Obama spends a trillion dollars on building infrastructure-or when he spends a trillion dollars giving away money to people who don’t pay taxes-the liberal tax and spenders don’t consider that to be “government spending.” Why not? Doesn’t it add to the budget deficit? But letting taxpayers like you and me keep more of our own money - which isn’t spending at all - that is blamed for busting the budget?

Now, into this miasma of misguided thinking enters Barack Obama with his first big act as president - an almost trillion-dollar stimulus plan (which I predict he’ll expand dramatically after only a few months in office).

He wants to build infrastructure with a large portion of it - highways, bridges, and schools. With the rest, he will send government checks to millions of Americans who’ve never paid taxes, and millions more (including government workers) who have steady jobs.

So why give them a check? The people who need the money are small-business owners who are struggling because consumers have stopped buying. Unfortunately, they made too much money last year, so Obama has disqualified them.

Oh, and just for good measure, Obama will spend a bunch of “leftover” money on creating 600,000 government jobs that will bankrupt taxpayers not just today, but for decades to come. Those 600,000 new government employees will be getting bloated salaries, pensions, and health benefits for the next fifty years.

This is Obama’s version of Economics 101: Massive Spending + Massive Debt = Economic Recovery. Good luck to all of us. We’ll need it. Because it’s not going to work.
